Application and Visa Process
  1. Complete this simple online form and receive information directly from the institutions that offer your desired program.
  2. Please carefully note application deadlines. Most university applicants apply by mid-March for entrance into the regular fall term in early September to ensure sufficient time for processing of the application and the required authorization to study in Canada (www.cic.gc.ca).
  3. A letter of acceptance may take 3-5 weeks or longer to receive, depending upon the program and your previous grades. Correspond directly with the institution to which you are applying for admission status updates.
  4. Complete a student visa application form from the Canadian Embassy serving your region.
There is a checklist available online at www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/imm5483e.pdf to guide your application process.

Student visa applications often take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to process and longer if you apply during peak processing season.

Quick Links Working as an International Student

On Campus
Many campuses provide job opportunities for international students so they can earn money and gain Canadian work experience. You may work on campus at the institution where you study without a work permit if:
  • you are enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian university, a community college, a publicly funded trade or technical school or a private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees.
  • you have a valid study permit.
Off Campus
Canadian Immigration laws were recently changed to allow international students to work off campus in Nova Scotia. International students are now able to work for up to 20 hours per week off-campus and full time during school breaks. International students are required to apply for an off campus work permit prior to beginning work off campus. Some restrictions may apply. You should ask for the latest information from your international student advisor if you wish to seek off-campus employment.

Work as Part of a Post-Secondary Program

International students with a valid student permit who are required to complete work practicums as part of their studies may work off-campus.

Working in Nova Scotia after Graduation
As of April 2008, international students graduating from public post- secondary institutions and private post- secondary institutions authorized to confer degrees are eligible to receive work permits of up to 3 years depending on the length of their studies.
